According to Wiki, Turmeric is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial flowering plant that belongs to the Ginger family and is very common all over the world.

In Nigeria, it is a powerful spice used by several ethnic tribes and is well known as ‘Ata Ile’ in the Yoruba language.

According to information gotten online, Turmeric is also a common ingredient in curry powder has a lot of health benefits. Though the benefits of Turmeric are exhaustive, they are summarized into nine (9) points:


1. It improves the heart.
The active component in turmeric which is curcumin has been proven to prevent oxidation of cholesterol which damages blood vessels. The oxidation of cholesterol leads to stroke and heart attack.

Curcumin helps to increase the level of HDL (high-density lipoprotein) which is cholesterol that is good for sound health.

2. It fights obesity.
Research has shown that curcumin found in turmeric helps the body to fight against obesity. It helps in burning fat and also lowers insulin resistance.

3. An effective aid for arthritic patients.
Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory substance that reduces pain and swelling at the joint. It is very effective for patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

4. It has antibacterial properties.
Turmeric can be used to treat cuts and burns; this is because it has antibacterial properties that can help wounds and cuts to heal fast.

5. It helps in reducing high blood sugar level.
Turmeric is very helpful in reducing the blood sugar level especially after eating food with high level of starch and sugar.

However, it is advised that diabetic patients consult a medical practitioner before taking a regular dosage of turmeric.

6. Detoxifies the liver.
It has been used for long to treat liver disorders by detoxifying the liver. It prevents free radical damage caused by fats to the liver.

7. Cures heartburn and indigestion.
It has anti-inflammatory properties that make effective in curing heartburn and indigestion.

8. Acts as effective pain relief:
Curcumin in turmeric is a natural painkiller that works better than strong pain reliefs like Ibuprofen.

9. Treats and reduces the risk of cancer.
One major benefit of turmeric is its ability to treat cancer. The curcumin in it helps to induce cell death and fight cancers that are resistant to chemotherapy and radiation.
