Like her mother, she soon began ice skating and competed in the U.S. Championships in junior ice dancing with her skating partner David Schilling in 1988.

The pair, however, finished in 13th place. Due to a stress fracture in her right leg, Julie had to take time off ice skating at 14.
As a teenager, Julie was often told by an acting coach that she would never succeed.

After graduating high school in 1990, she was accepted into New York University, where she studied acting and graduated in 1993.
