All Ecowas Countries and Their Capitals: Names, Maps & Facts
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was founded to promote political cooperation, social development, and economic integration among West African countries. Ecowas was founded through the treaty of Lagos on 28 May 1975.
The creation of Ecowas aims to promote peace and stability within the region, facilitate the free movement of people and goods, and create a common market. Since its creation, the organisation has fostered regional unity and economic growth.
One o Ecowas most notable achievements since its establishment is that the organisation has been involved in conflict resolution and peacekeeping missions, helping restore stability in countries experiencing political crises, and implementing protocols that allow citizens of member states to travel visa-free within the region.
Ecowas has been a vital institution in West Africa; its member countries and their capitals play important roles in supporting the organisation’s goals of social progress and political stability in the West African nations. As of 2026, the organisation has twelve members from the region after the withdrawal of the three Sahel states. Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger formally withdrew from ECOWAS on 29 January 2025 and are no longer members.
