Jean-Pierre Coffe Biography | Early Life

Jean-Pierre Coffe born 24 March, 1938, in Lunéville. He didn’t know his father, as he was mobilized in the army and killed in battle before Jean-Pierre was born.

His mother was a hairdresser who raised him with the help of his grandparents. His grandmother worked as a cook while his grandfather was a market gardener.

Jean-Pierre’s mother later moved from Lorraine to Paris, where he was enrolled in a boarding school.

His passion for theatre began at age 13; having completed his studies, he attended the Cours Simon classes and started doing small jobs to sustain himself.

His television career began in the 1980s, precisely in November 1984, when he joined “Canal+” and appeared on some programs hosted by Michel Denisot.

In 1990, Jean-Pierre joined the radio team of “Les Grosses Têtes”.

Philippe Bouvard hosted the radio program on RTL, and he soon became a regular participant and part of the team until September 2010.

His first appearance in “La Grande Famille” was in 1992, a program hosted by Jean-Luc Delarue, and in 1993 he appeared “Demain,” a cooking-themed program hosted by Michel Denisot.

From 1992 to 1993, Jean-Pierre hosted “Comment c’est fait ?” (“How is it done?”), a cooking program for children, aired on French public television channels, France 3.

In 1994, he hosted another show, “C’est tout Coffe”(“This is all Coffe”) on France 2.

In addition, he appeared in advertising spots in 1997 for famous manufacturing company Siemens and 2001 for Weight Watchers.

In 1999 he joined a private channel, TF1, to present “Bien jardiner” (“Gardening well”), a program produced by his friend, Jean-Luc Delarue.

However, just immediately after the program began, Jean-Luc Delarue decided to end the broadcast, leading to the friendship between both parties.

Jean-Pierre later joined Michel Drucker in 2003, in the program “Vivement Dimanche prochain,” where he served as a food critic on channel France 2.

In 2012, he announced his departure from television programs to focus on writing instead.

Jean-Pierre wrote books on a variety of subjects. Some of his books published were on recipes, critiques of mass-produced food, manufacture of commercial food products, and gardening.

Jean-Pierre Coffe was a very private individual; however, he came out as bisexual in 2011.

This revelation was made known during an interview with MFM Radio again in 2013, and he re-emphasized it during France 2’s program La parenthèse inattendue.

He went through three marriages with different women and, in his final years, decided to settle down with a man whom he said he was ready to marry in 2013.

Coffe had a stepdaughter who died aged 35 and a son who died shortly after birth.

The French radio and television presenter, food critic, and author died at his home in Lanneray, on March 29, 2016, at age 78.
