In a sentence, for example, we can say “The baby has chubby cheeks”. For clarity, the word “chubby” is just a more pleasant way to describe an individual who is a little rounded; this description uses a friendly tone.

The word ‘fat’, on the other hand, is used to describe an individual who is overweight with excess body fat. In medical terms, fat people can also be referred to as being obese.

Most people who are fat are seen as unattractive. Additionally, the word “fat” sounds more negative and harsh. This is the reason why most people who are called “fat” easily gets pissed off because they feel offended whenever they are described as such.

As we’ve discussed, “chubby” sounds soft, friendly, and cute. Most people don’t consider it a harsh word but use it as a term of affection.

It is important to note that ” chubby” is often used for pets and babies. It is primarily used in Western English to describe someone or something in a harmless way. In many cultures, a bit of roundness can be considered as beauty. Countries such as South Asia and Latin America see chubby people as those living in good health and prosperity.


The word “fat,” on the other hand, is often used as an insult in the Western world. Countries like the United States and Western Europe frequently stigmatize fat people.

However, in our contemporary time, some communities and activists like Olivia Campbell, Tess Holliday, and Ashley Graham have decided to take it upon themselves to reclaim “fat” as a proud word. Olivia Campbell, for example, argues and supports the idea that “fat” is not bad; instead, it is just a descriptive word.

Additionally, if you find yourself in a scenario in which a person’s weight is being discussed, you can ask for permission if the person prefers to be called “fat”, “curvy”, or plus-size. This will help show that you consider them to avoid unnecessary offence or mockery.
