Lakisha was born in 1977, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, to Shamsuddin Ali and Faridah Ali. She was born into an African-American Muslim family.

Her father was formerly known as Clearance Fowler, and he was convicted of murder in the 1970s. He later established himself as the Philadelphia Masjid leader and became an influential Muslim cleric in West Philadelphia.

Lakisha attended a local high school in Philadelphia, and she had been a fan of boxing since her childhood.
