Catherine Ringer was born on 18 October 1957 in Suresnes, France.
Her father is a famous French artist Sam Ringer, who was initially born Polish but became a French citizen in 1980, while her mother was a student of architecture.
Catherine enjoyed singing and playing the flute as a child, which was the beginning of her love for music.
She attended Le College Honore de Balzac but left at 15 to start her artistic career.
Aside from singing, Catherine was also passionate about acting, which led to her getting roles as a young teenager.
Her first theatrical appearance, being with Michael Londsdale’s “Theatre de Recherche Musicale,” Catherine was also cast as a singer in Pierre Bourgeade’s piece, ‘Fragments Pour Le Che.’

Catherine’s dancing career began after meeting Argentinean dancer and choreographer ‘Marcia Moretto’ who later became her dance instructor.
Together, they performed at the Café de LA Gare in 1976 and danced in Armando Llamas’ production, “Silences Nocturnes Aux Iles Des Fees,” performed at Théâtre Le Palace in 1977.
That same year, Catherine appeared in several productions and music plays.
While being involved in plays and dance production, Catherine also performed in pornographic films, the likes of 1976 “La Fessée” and 1977 “Body Love,” she also did some pornographic photoshoots for ‘the Color Climax Corporation’ in 1980 while also voicing cartoons and appeared in “Le Temps Des YeYes” a television film.
In 1979, she met Fred Chinchin, a French guitarist, with whom she started the music group “Les Rita Mitsouko.”
She was the lead singer, while Fred, already active in the French rock scene, played guitar.

The duo made their live debut in 1980, and their recording debut happened in 1982, with the song ‘Minuit Dansant.’
Les Rita Mitsouko’s full-length album was released in 1984; their single “Marcia Baïla” soon became a hit, reaching No.2 on the French song chart in 1985.
The song was a tribute to Moretto, Catherine’s former dance teacher, who died in 1981.
Their subsequent albums “Comprendo” in 1986 and “Marc & Robert” in 1988 were equally successful, with some hit songs recorded.
The album “Marc & Robert” won a Victoires de la Musique award for Best Album of the Year.
The group, however, became inactive in the 90s, although Catherine was still actively singing through collaborations and features.
Only after the death of Fred Chinchin, in November 2007, from cancer, did she release her first solo album.
The album titled “Chante les Rita Mitsouko and More à la Cigale” was released in 2008 on Fred’s first death anniversary.
