In our contemporary time, we use technological devices such as mobile phones, laptops, tablets, etc for almost everything we do. Some of these activities can range from chatting and working to tracking your status on a particular activity. As a result of this, most of us are always glued to our screens. Technology as a whole is beneficial; however, it is essential to note that it also poses some disadvantages.


Research has shown that staring at our phone or laptop screen for extended periods is not suitable for our health. This is the reason why digital detox is essential. Digital detox or digital detoxification is a form of rest taken from your screen to relax your mind, body, and also regain balance. In this article, we will look at four different tips you can apply to reduce your screen time and feel more in control.

Before trying to do a digital detox, it is essential to know what actually makes you spend most of your time on your phone or laptop screen. It could be as a result of your job or just because you want to have fun.


Having a good understanding of what triggers you to always want to use your smart devices will help you make the necessary changes. Let us make an analogy. Let’s say that you use your phone whenever you feel bored. You can instead change your activity at this kind of time by reading a book or going for a walk. This will help reduce your screen time.

Replace Your Digital Habits with Real Life Activities


Instead of staying glued to your screen all day, you can choose to engage in activities that are more in tune with reality. There are many fun activities that you can get involved in. Some of them include the following: cooking, painting, chatting with your friends, writing, playing a game, etc. The list is exhaustive. You just have to do what you love or what you are interested in.

Be Intentional With The Use Of Social Media Platforms


The activities people get involved in on social media are one of the reasons why most people spend a lot of time online. However, controlling the time we spend and how we spend it on these platforms is very important.


I don’t suggest deleting our social media accounts; however, there are some actions that we can take to reduce our screen time. Some of them include: turning off social media notifications, unfollowing social media pages that are not adding value to our lives, limiting the number of times we check our social media apps per day, etc.

Digital Detox Tips – Trying a Weekend Digital Detox


If none of the above tips are significant for you, probably because of the nature of your work or some other reasons, you can decide to do a digital detox every weekend. You can fix it on Saturdays or Sundays, as long as you choose a day that is comfortable for you.


On this particular day, you can stay off social media and try to spend some more time developing yourself in other areas of your life. It is, however, important to tell friends, coworkers, and family members before you make this decision.

Digital Detox Tips – Setting Boundaries


One of the best ways to do a digital detox is to set boundaries indicating the times and places where you can use your devices. For example, you can drop your phone in the living room and don’t take it to the bedroom with you before bed.

With this, you’ll get a better rest without being distracted. Also, you can decide not to use your phone while eating or while doing something that requires your full attention.
As you put these rules in place for yourself and stick to them, you will start to see changes over time.
