Philip Ballantyne Kerr was born on the 22nd of February 1956. He, however, died on the 23rd of March 2018.

When he was alive, he was a famous British author and popularly known for the Bernie Gunther series of detective thrillers.

Early life

Philip Kerr was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father was an engineer, while his mother was a secretary in a company in Scotland.

He had his secondary education in Northampton, after which he proceeded to the University of Birmingham for a Master’s degree in law and philosophy from 1974 to 1980.

Upon graduation, Philip Kerr worked for Saatchi & Saatchi as an advertising copywriter, after which he was promoted to the position of a full-time writer in 1989.

Kerr gave an interview in 2012 where he declared that his writing career started when he was 12 years old and that he began with pornographic stories.

After writing such stories, he would allow his classmates to read them for a fee.

Writing career

Philip Kerr was known for writing both fiction and non-fiction books, and most of his works are focused on adult content.

One of his best works was the Bernhard “Bernie” Gunther series that focused on historical thrillers.

The scene of the series was set in Germany and some other places. He equally carved the stories around the 1930s, the Cold War, and Second World War.

Aside from adult content, he equally wrote books focused on children under the name P.B Kerr.

His children’s series was titled the Children of the Lamp series. Additionally, he wrote for various newspapers, including the New Statesman, the Evening Standard, and The Sunday Times.

Personal life

Philip Kerr got married to Jane Thynne, who is a novelist just like him. The two of them gave birth to three children.

Philip Kerr cause of death

He was diagnosed with cancer and died from its complications on the 23rd of March, 2018.

Close to his death, he was working on a novel titled Metropolis, which was his 14th novel on Bernie Gunther.

He finished the work just before he died, and it was published after his death in 2019. He died from bladder cancer at the age of 62.

Awards and honors

Philip Kerr was named in 1993 in Best Young British Novelists list by Granta.

His work, the Dead Rise Not, was awarded the RBA Prize for Crime Writing, which was considered the world’s most lucrative crime fiction award; the prize money for that award was €125,000.

That same book won the Ellis Peters Historical Crime Award by the British Crime Writer’s Association the same year.

Another of his work, Prussian Blue, was listed on the 2018 Walter Scott Prize.

Net Worth

Philip Kerr has so many jobs to his name and can be considered one of Britain’s most decorated novelists.His net worth was around $5 million, making him one of the wealthiest novelists even in death.
