Types Of Dragons Around The World

Dragon tales and myths are popular across many cultures and histories. We grew up watching movies (like Merlin, Game of Thrones, and many more) and reading folktales with dragon characters, making them one of the most popular mythological creatures.

Most of us marveled at how powerful the animals are when watching movies or hearing stories about them.

We have seen them breathe fire, capture people, or rescue royalties in movies, so we might already be quite familiar with certain qualities they exhibit. What we probably might not already know, however, is that there are different sizes, origins, and types of dragons.

Like dogs and cats and every other animal you could think of, not every dragon is the same.

Different types of dragons are determined by the number of limbs or the other creatures they resemble.

They also differ by the color of their skin or how they attack their prey.

There exists vast diversity among dragons. Some have wings; others do not.

Some can speak or breathe fire; others cannot. Some are only a few feet long; others span miles.

Some live in palaces under the ocean, while others can only be found in caves and inside mountains.

These diverse qualities are what make the species of dragons that exist numerous.

‘A dragon is a large, serpentine legendary creature that appears in the folklore of many cultures worldwide.

Beliefs about dragons vary considerably through regions, but dragons in western cultures since the High Middle Ages have often been depicted as winged, horned, four-legged, and capable of breathing fire.’

They have existed long in history and are among the strongest animals ever existed – with traits that are both dangerous and spectacular. They are both factual and legendary, so there are many folktales and mythologies about them.

Some of the types of dragons that have been discovered over the years are discussed below.

Dragons

Drake

You are probably wondering why the name of a person and popular musician is appearing in an article on dragons. Well, that is because Drake is a type of dragon. T in middle English, Drake means ‘Dragon.’

This type of dragon looks very similar to a lizard at first glance but is much larger with low slung bodies and bellies that skim the ground.

African Dragon

These dragons are like huge snakes. They do not have legs or arms and thus resemble huge serpents. Because of their eerie resemblance with snakes, it is argued by many that they are not a type of dragon.

Flying Dragons

This type we are all quite familiar with due to their popularity in movies. They have Southeast Asia origins and are particularly found in India.

They are camouflage quite efficiently, and you might assume they are lizards once you see them gliding on treetops with their colorful patagia until they spread their wings.

Different species of Flying Dragons possess patagia in different hues.

Golden Dragons

These are one of the strongest and most powerful dragons ever existed. They breathe spirit fire and can win in most solo battles.

As their name suggests, these types of dragons have gold scales.

Ruby Seadragon

Like the gem they share a name with, these dragons are red, which is their greatest camouflage tactic.

When underwater, when their body’s red color gets filtered out, they appear black protecting themselves against predators.

They carry their infants in tails rather than bellies.

Oriental Dragons

These are one of the friendliest dragons you could ever come across. They are not dangerous. They do not harm humans too. They are like guardian angels without wings.

They are wingless and have four legs on each foot. They are the type of dragons you will hear stories on how they protect people and heaven in myths.

Yamauchi no Orochi

These types are popular in Japanese mythologies. They are one of the famous dragons, especially with stories on how they devour maidens each year.

They have eight heads and tails and are regarded as extremely evil.

Amphitheatre

These species are hybrids, part snake and part birds. They have the features of a snake from head to tail and sprout bat-like wings from their necks.

These types of snakes may or may not have forelimbs, but they never have hindlimbs.

Ruddy Dragon Millipede

These are pink in color and live in caves. They produce cyanide (not fire, but close) to protect themselves.

Komodo Dragon

These types are extremely dangerous. They can not only harm humans but also kill or eat them.

They weigh 300+ pounds. They possess lacerating teeth that dispatch nasty venom with alarming speed into their victim’s flesh.

Their primary predators are dragons of their species – other Komodo dragons.

Some other types of dragons that have been discovered are;

  • Dragon beasts
  • Wyvern
  • Anthropomorphic
  • Western
  • Lindworm
  • Wurm
  • Cockatrice
  • Fafnir
  • Fucanglong
  • Blue Dragon Sea Slug

The above and many other rare types of dragons that have existed or existing have been discovered.

Now is the right time to answer the question that many ask about dragons – ‘Do they exist?’

Dragons (or at least the versions of them we grew up gearing stories about) seem too big and too fantastic to take seriously or literally.

The answer is, ‘Yes, they exist.’There have been many eyewitnesses who swore to have seen them over the years. Furthermore, dragons do not show any sign of extinction – unlike their counterpart dinosaurs – and will continue to exist for years.
