Tems is a Nigerian songwriter, singer, and record producer. She’s popularly known for her hit song “No Woman, No Cry” and her featured song “Raindance” with the British rapper Dave. Temilade Openiyi, known by her stage name, Tems, was born on the 11th June 1995, in Lagos, Nigeria.
She was born to a Nigerian-British father, while her mother is a Nigerian from the southwestern region of the country.

Both parents are of Yoruba heritage, and she is the second child of the family. After her birth, the family briefly relocated to the United Kingdom. However, following her parents’ divorce when she was just five years old, she returned to Nigeria with her mother.

On her return to Nigeria, the family settled in Ajah, Lagos State. She enrolled at Dowell College, one of the most expensive schools in Nigeria, for her primary and high school education. She then proceeded to the University of Johannesburg in South Africa, where she earned a degree in Economics.

Moving on to her musical journey, Tems’ music career began to take shape at an early age. Tems was raised in a Christian family, and while she was growing up, she came in
contact with lots of gospel songs. And when she became older, she sought to discover other music genres, which led her to songs by superstars such as Aliya, Lil Wayne, Beyonce and Destiny’s Child.
The superstar singer had great help from her music teacher, who taught her how to play the piano. As her teacher helped her to refine her sound, she began to envisage a career in music, and she learned how to play the guitar using her brother’s guitar. At the age of 15, she had already decided that she wanted to pursue music professionally.
To make her dream a reality, she stopped listening to other artists in an attempt to develop her own style. She began to create music in her own way, leading to the style that is regarded as a fusion of Afrobeat and R&B. While in the university, she had picked up some production and began learning the skills. The goal behind learning the skills was to produce beats for her own songs.

The remix also featured Davido, On the 25th of September 2020, she collaborated with the Nigerian Afrobeat star Wizkid on the song Essence, which is the most successful single from her album Made in Lagos.
